The weather is so warm here that I have my windows open. I have never lived so high before, and I’m surprised by the sudden gusts of wind. I’ve learned to close the windows before going to sleep or else be startled awake at night.
Before moving here from Seattle, I lived in an apartment surrounded by a bamboo grove that we nicknamed “the birdcage” and, more recently, in a house with a stream in the backyard, in which beavers built a dam. I have never felt so connected to the natural world outside my windows as I do in this apartment. I somehow thought that living in a high-rise would be a cold, sterile experience with a lovely view. It seems just the opposite to me now.
In the evenings this summer, and at daybreak, swifts circle my building. I can sit at my window and watch them playing in the gusts of an approaching rainstorm. Huge dragonflies buzz by. It’s beautiful.
