Little brother, mutual friend, and I went hiking this weekend. Here is one of the alpine lakes we visited. Beautiful, no?

Here is an example of the average trail conditions on the 5 mile (10 mile, round trip) day hike by which we reached these lakes.

Note that this stretch of trail is merely average. Above average would include stretches of pointy and/or slippery rocks, a delightful mixture of pointy rock and slippery mud, or the prostrate bodies of exhausted hikers.
