True Story

My brother and I were driving across town a couple weeks ago. I said, “If I could have any superpower, it wouldn’t be to shoot laser beams out of my eyeballs, or leap tall buildings. Or even to fly. I’d have the power to make people see the truth. Myself included.”

“That’s a good one,” my brother said thoughtfully. “But, would that make you a super-hero or a super-villain? I think you’d be considered a super-villain. I mean, think of all the people who you would leave in your path as twitching heaps, curled into the fetal position, unable to cope with what you’ve shown them.”

Glass-half-full kind of a guy, my little brother.

I laughed. “That’s true. I guess I’d be a super-villain. I mean, the government would be after me. And I bet I’d have a nemesis. Who would my nemesis be?”

“Untruth boy? Fox News?”

“No, no, I know! Karl Rove Boy!”

“Ug! Unnecessary mental image of Karl Rove in tights! Oh, that’s just wrong. Gross.” Shuddering.

“See? My super-villain power is starting to work already!”
