I’m housesitting. I have a new little friend, a poodle. He is the sweetest. Usually, when someone tells me that some pint-sized little dog is “so cute” or “so sweet” I want to slap them. I have met the exceptional. Do not mess with my little buddy, he really is the sweetest. And he will pee on command.
The second I got back from driving his rightful owners to the airport this week, I walked in the front door and asked him if he wanted to go for a W-A-L-K. The dog looked at me as if heaven had opened over my head. He just stared at me for a whole 10 seconds, neither of us moving, as he wondered if this was too good to believe. I repeated the magic word and he went ballistic, circling me and barking until I had extracted the leash from the hall closet. Then, and this is the cutest (shut up), he stuck out his chest and tried to sit perfectly still, so that I could attach the leash to his collar - but he was so excited he couldn’t stop whimpering and wriggling the whole time.
I opened the door and this 7 pound dog nearly took my arm off in his haste down the front walk. Evidently, he has a regular route, because I was not steering. He was so excited he dragged me from one clump of significant foliage to the next. Within seconds, I had decided to give in. He’s old, he’ll wear himself out and calm down, I thought. So, instead of a brisk walk that kept the leash taut, I started to trot behind him in my flip-flops.
He felt me and, looking back, picked up his pace as well. Pretty soon I was running in my sandals, still being dragged along, behind this 7-pound miniature dog. It was a sunny morning and people were driving by on their way to work. The dog started to bark with joy and I started to laugh, I couldn’t help it. And then I thought about how we must look, me dragged along by this tiny dog, flip-flops flapping, my hair coming out of it’s knot, little dog barking and straining against the leash - and then I couldn’t stop laughing.
We passed a construction site and a wi-fi cafe and people stared. We yipped and giggled for 4 blocks. It was fabulous.
